What does "spark plug fouling" mean?

Aviation
I would like to get a clear explanation. I heard that this happens when a cylinder or a combustion chamber temperature increases. Would this be related to icing?

Q: What is a "fouled" spark plug?

A: A spark plug is considered fouled when the insulator nose at the firing tip becomes coated with a foreign substance such as fuel, oil or carbon. This coating makes it easier for the voltage to follow along the insulator nose, leach back down into the metal shell and ground out rather than bridging the gap and firing normally.

Many factors can contribute to spark plug fouling. The air/fuel ratio may be too rich as a result of incorrect carburetor adjustment or a poorly performing fuel injection system. Worn piston rings or valve seals may allow too much oil to leak into the combustion chamber, leading to oil fouling. The ignition system may not be performing properly. Prolonged idling or continuous low-speed driving may keep the spark plug from reaching its optimum operating temperature. Using too cold a spark plug can lead to the same problem. Finally, a dirty air cleaner can create a too-rich condition which can lead to fouling.

Fuel, oil and carbon fouling can all be the result of different causes but, once a spark plug is fouled, it will not provide adequate voltage to the firing tip and that cylinder will not fire properly. In many cases, the spark plug cannot be cleaned sufficiently to restore normal operation. Therefore, it is recommended that a plug be replaced once it is fouled.

05 Honda 400EX spark plug fouling?

The spark plug on my 2005 Honda 400EX keeps fouling up. I am the only rider on it and I do not choke it to start it, and I do not ride it in 4th gear going 10 mph either. I clean the air filter regularly and it is bone stock, no mods at all. It seems to be getting worse as it will hardly idle. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The seal in the chock could be leaking causing the plug to foul.Plus what ever Guardrail says.

what makes your spark plug foul out?

I use the wrong gas in my lawn mower by mistake ( two cycle oil mixed with gas) but i drained all the gas out and replaced it with regular gas but my spark plug still foul outs. It runs with a mist with black smoke but runs right when the gas is about to run out. Whats wrong and how can i fix it?

Incomplete or improper burning of the fuel. Carbon (soot) and or oil build up and decrease the efficiency of the plug.

Clean out your carburetor. Sounds like your flooding it with fuel. Needle valve may be stuck.

Also check the kinflinctor pin right beside the discombobulator valve. It can seize up on you.

what makes your spark plug foul out on your lawn mower and how to fix it?

every time i put a new spark plug into my lawn mower it works fine for about 3 minutes then it will foul back out then it start running with a mist to it with black smoke

Too much fuel from the carb. Most of them have a removable float bowl. take it of and check that its not full of crap keeping the float from stopping the fuel flow. Could also be the choke is stuck in the partly closed position

1986 Yamaha XV700 keeps fouling the right spark plug?

Recently purchased, it has had the carb and valves adjusted by a professional, but keeps fouling the right spark plug. What could it be? Please help

at relatively high mileages the oil thats been pumped around the valves settles when bike is parked and then seeps past the valve guide, this makes it smoke a bit on startup, also can foul the plug on offending cylinder, dont worry unduly about it, my xv1100 has done this for the last 10,000 miles, just carry a wire brush n clean plug.

Spark plug fouling - Benelli Pepe 50 - Scooter Community ...

Hi all.

My Pepe has done 3000 kms and usually starts and runs really well, except that twice already, the plug has fouled to the point that the gap is almost totally closed up, and runs like a wet sock - I am amazed it runs at all.  The fouling is black and dry.   I am guessing that it is not something serious as it doesn't happen every day, but am sure it is not correct.  I have had the fuel mixture checked, and was told that it was fine, so should I suspect that the oil pump is not metering correctly?  It uses approx 1 litre of Motul 710 2t per 1000 kms which I think is what is the quantity that I have been told it is supposed to...  Any thoughts?

Automobile Configuration

The suspension in a drift car is very tight and unforgiving – even the chassis is tightened with roll cages and strut braces. Die-hard drifting enthusiasts also alter the suspension geometry to enable the car to slide better. As with everything, modification of the body and suspension components is a trade-off. Hard suspension in the front and a soft suspension in the back is easiest for first timers, but a handicap at higher levels. Most cars use an integrated coilover/shock (MacPherson strut) combination called shakocho. This allows for the height of the car to be adjusted. Better shakocho will be what the Japanese call “full-tap”. This means the bottom of the strut is also a coil over, so you can change the height of the car from the bottom, and the height of the spring with the top. Usually a driver wants to have full stroke on his shocks, so he will raise the spring to its highest point. There is no perfect height setting or spring/shock combo for any car, but there are perfect setups for particular drivers. Many suspension manufacturers, such as Kei Office, APEX’i, Tein, JIC Magic, and HKS, offer suspension tuned specifically for drifting, allowing many people to enter the sport competitively.
