Is it possible to spray paint my car wheel rims?
BMW E93 M3 on Forged 1 Seven Mesh (Step Lips)

I'm not really sure what they are officially called, but my car wheel rims or hubs or whatever are rather dull, and I wanted to know if I could just sort of... spray paint them a different color?
Maybe like a metallic blue or something?
Would that work? Or is there specific... erm... wheel rim paint?

Yes Absolutely you can paint them.... It would be best if you could take them off the car..... Its ok to leave the tire on..... Clean all the dirt and grease off them.... Dry them off.... Sand down any rust... If the rust is heavy use a wire wheel on the end of an electric drill.... Then sand them down.... Go to a hardware store and pick up Wet Sand paper.... Its usually black or gray sand paper and its made to be used with water.... Keep it wet and sand the finish till its dull.... Primer and paint wont stick to glossy paint finishes.... Use 600 grit paper.... When done dry it off..... let any water evaporate out of any crevasses...... Use paper and tape to mask off the tire.... You dont want overspray on the tire.... Apply a coat of spray paint primer.... after this is dry apply a spray paint coat of what ever color you want....

ABOUT COLOR..... Be carefull --- The wrong color can make the car look corny..... If its an old school car from the 70's or before then you could paint the wheels to match the body, or white, or black or silver and it would look good...... If you car is a newer front wheel drive car then I would avoid any color except black, aluminum color, white, gray or silver.... But hey -- its your choice...

Slap in a new set of chrome lug nuts and it will look great.....

Why do car wheel rims appear as if they are spinning backwards at fast speeds?
BMW E93 M3 on Forged 1 Seven Mesh (Step Lips)

Has anybody ever wondered why car wheel rims appear as if they are spinning backwards at a fast speed (maybe at least 25 mph?), then at slow speeds, the rims return back to their forward rotation. Has anybody else noticed this and can explain why this happens? I am guessing something to do with how the light is reflected off of the rims creating an optical illusion.
I do not mean spinners either, sorry for the confusion, but I do appreciate the effort.

This is an illusion and will only appear within motion video footage. In the real world, the motion of the wheels would simply blur with sufficient speed.

This artifact is called "aliasing". This is caused because motion video is actually a series of still pictures displayed in rapid succession, measured in "frames per second". Television screens show us 60 interlaced frames per second (in the United States; 50 in Europe and Australia), movie theater film at 24 frames per second, film destined for televsion at 25 frames per second, etc.

You can imagine how this can create aliasing. Imagine that a six-spoked wheel were spinning at exactly the right speed that in 1/24th of a second, it were to make exactly 1/6th of a full rotation. A movie film recorder would take a still image of the wheel and then 1/24th of a second later, it would take another image. But since the wheel has six spokes, the next image of the wheel would look almost identical to the first, assuming all the spokes are equally spaced, etc. Over time, the motion video would look like the wheel was not moving at all because the six spokes would appear not to move. What is simply happening is that your eye is not seeing all of the motion that is happening in the 1/24th of a second in between each frame.

If the wheel were turning very slightly slower than this, then the spoke would not exactly reach the next 1/6th of its position. Instead, it would fall slightly behind where the next spoke's image was taken in the first frame. The third frame would again take an image with the next spoke falling slightly behind again. Over time, the motion video would make the wheel appear to be moving slowly backward.

(Note that this effect *can* be seen in real life, but it would require a light source which has a "strobe" effect. The sun would never do this, nor would standard incandescent lights. Some flourescent lighting, however, has a flicker to it, which is why some people have difficulty working under them. Television sets, of course, also have a flicker since they are displaying those still images in rapid succession. Ever try spreading your fingers out and moving your hand back and forth across a television screen?

This makes TV light a good way to test out aliasing. Turn on the TV at night and turn off all the rest of the lights in the room. Then, take a toy wheel with spokes and turn it at different speeds under the television's illumination. At certain speeds, you will see the aliasing effect.)

Mother's Mag and Aluminum Polish is the best thing for aluminum wheels. It will make the wheels shine like mirrors.

We use it not only to detail cars, but also on Fire Department vehicles.

  • Wheels May Get Smaller, Says Toyota Design Chief - Car and Driver Blog

Big wheels keep on turnin’ at the auto industry’s design studios, which prefer larger rims and low-profile tires that accentuate a car’s stance and power. Car buyers like them, too, and 18 and 19-inch rims—once the province only of customizers—are now common factory equipment on family sedans and crossovers. But fresh concerns about the weight and fuel-economy toll of big wheels may threaten the recent upward growth of wheels, says one of Toyota’s chief designers.

Kevin Hunter, director of Toyota’s CALTY Design Research Center in Newport Beach, California, says wheel size is becoming a “battleground” as designers and marketers push for larger wheels but engineers look for ways to cut mass and improve fuel economy. A large rim, such as the 20-inch wheel/tire package available on the new Toyota Venza crossover, can weigh up to 60 pounds. And, because it’s rotational mass rather than part of the car body’s inert mass, wheel/tire heaviness creates a disproportionate drag on fuel economy. Cut five pounds from one wheel/tire combo by shrinking the rim size an inch or two, and you save 20 pounds per vehicle, a huge amount to an engineer tasked with picking through every vehicle design for spare ounces. And you may be able to shrink the brakes as well. It could all add up to an additional 1 to 2 mpg on the window sticker, an important gain from an easy, no-cost fix—the best kind for an industry grappling with new, tougher fuel economy standards.
