I owe a car insurance agency money to the point of collection. Can I get insurance elsewhere?

I've run into some serious financial strain within the past year. I stopped making payments on my car insurance under the assumption that they would cancel within two weeks at the latest. I was wrong and I have learned my lesson. I will call and cancel next time. In the meantime, I believe they charged me for another month, plus late fees.

I need car insurance - at the minimum liability as I live in Virginia, US - but I owe the old car insurer (Progressive) money. I've called and spoken to an agent - they said (obviously) that I must pay what is owed and then pay the premium for the new term before they can activate my car insurance again. I can not afford this right now.

My question: Can I simply go to another company and get car insurance to cover me now (therefore just paying a premium) and worry about paying the other insurer the balance owed later (which would be just the debt)?

There are reasons why insurers want to see your credit records before they quote you and this is one of them.
But perhaps if you pay for a full year upfront they'll have no reason to doubt you'll pay them.
Surely the best way to find out is to just get quoted and see.
Here's one I know http://best-american-insurers-free-compa rison.servicesarticles.com
But I'd shop around for insurance as their prices will differ wildly.

would like to know about the insurance procedures in the US?

some people get their car insurance from a "insurance agency?" so in the little office they get their quotes and stuff from the agent, so correct me if i'm wrong, the client is getting his insurance through the agent, so my question is, wouldn't it be cheaper if you just sign up for car insurance directly on the insurance companies' websites, skipping the middle man?

thanks for reading it

In many cases you can buy direct from an insurance company but often you may find it a better option to go through an agency. An independent agent works with several different companies some of these companies don't sell direct to consumers. The agent never adds a surcharge but they get paid by the insurance company on a commission basis.

In most cases the rate is the same but the agent is able to negotiate with the insurers on your behalf to find the best deal for you. Because of this often agents can get a better price then purchasing direct from a carrier. Also they are able to shop several companies at once to find the best deal.

Either option works but with an independent agent you also get their advice in choosing the correct policy and understanding your coverage. Often when you have a claim they will also help negotiate Your claim with the insurance carrier on your behalf.

Can car insurance companies put black marks on your credit score?

We've had a frustrating mix-up with State Farm. Basically, they insured my husband for 6 months without his paying anything. It wasn't intentional on the part of my husband or myself; our agent told us we didn't owe anything, or we would have paid months ago.

Now, however, they're wanting us to pay $1600 for those 6 months as well as for the next 6 months.

We're not financially in a position to do this.

Our insurance agent told us that, at the risk of losing our business, he felt we should know that we're "ahead" at this point and that, if we left State Farm and went to another agency, State Farm would be unable to get the past-due money from us.

This seems like the logical thing to do at this point, but my concern is for our credit scores. Technically, can you owe an insurance company money? If he went six months without paying, why didn't they just cancel his insurance rather than running up a tab?

They're not a lender, so do they have the power to negatively affect our credit scores?

I think that anyone that you owe money to can file a report for non payment with your name on it. They just take you to court and it'll happen automatically.

When an insurance company writes a check for a damaged car, who is the check written to?

My car was parked in a friends driveway. My friend backed into my car. The damage is 3, 400 dollars worth. When the insurance writes a check to fix the damage, who will the check be written out to. The car shop?... or to me? My company is US Agencies

The key to finding these types of deals is to set aside some time in order to do your research.  Research the deals and coupon code websites, check the aggregators, and then go directly to the rental agencies themselves if it will save you money.  Usually if you take your time and can find stackable discounts like we did, you can save hundreds of dollars off of your rental.  It will definitely be worth your time.

Peter, thanks for writing this post. We have to rent cars a couple of times over the balance of this year so maybe we’ll take a stab at some of these tips.

On the $9/day insurance, check with your auto insurance company before buying it. Our carrier (IDS) includes that coverage, as long as the vehicle you’re renting is a comparable class (or lower) than the vehicles you own.
