Are there specific companies that deal in this? Is it generally cheaper due to restrictions on the use of the car?
There are a number of companies which have a "classic" car insurance scheme.
It varies according to the company and there is no set eligibility for insurance.
These policies are generally cheaper but put restrictions on mileage etc.
For vehicle tax purposes it used to be 25 years but this government changed it and now I believe only cars registered before 1973 are exempt.
(not sure on the date it is 73 or 74 I think)

I am 17 and have passed my driving test, so hold a full UK license, i wan't to borrow my dad's classic car for a day, to take my date to the the end of year prom. Is it possible to get temporary insurance for me for just a day? without adding me to the actual car policy? It is a Triumph Spitfire 1500. Thank you for your ideas.
I don't think so.
try getting quoted at http://simplyinsurancequotes.com/uk/eGro upmotoring-insurance-quotes.php?id=8893 they might beat whatever quote, classic or not.
tax, or MOT, but I can't remember what...anyone know?
My classic policy premium was cheaper, but remember that you don't accrue no claims bonus on the policy if you plan to use it for a 'non classic' later.
I'm 23 and want to do the impossible, and drive a powerful car yet avoid paying thousands a year in insurance.
Can I save much by driving a classic car (with road tax exempt status) - e.g. a 1990 Jaguar XJS 5.3 litre V12 my father owns? Or how about a 1994 Saab 900 SE 2 litre V4 (non-classic car)?
Can I save money by being a named driver on my father's insurance?
Or should I just walk more?
there is not a chance on earth a 1994 car will EVER be tax exempt in the UK, unless the old law that required a vehicle to become 25 year old to be exempt will come back.
This law was quashed by Tony Blair a year or two after he became prime minister.
The reason why younger people pay more money in insurance is they are more prone to accidents, however not all young men are high risk, indeed some have common sense and learn the ropes with less powerful cars, which in turn will cost less to insure.
So the common sense way to spend less money and be safer would be to get an F reg bluebird for a couple hundred quid and bash that about for some 30.000 miles, that way when you take a bend with under inflated tires chances are you won't be doing 100 miles an hours! Lol sorry half jocking here but there's some truth in it, I have been there myself and you ain't better than I ever was :) edit: this is where my 24 yo son got his insurance they do an online quote http://www.kqzyfj.com/click-2275619-1029 6084

Classic car enthusiasts are celebrating after the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu has stepped in and offered to host one of the UK’s most popular Classic Car and Bike Shows in its magnificent grounds on Sunday August 2nd 2009.
Originally called the Wroughton Classic, the show has become one of the fastest-growing events in the classic calendar. It had been in danger of cancellation after both the Wroughton venue and then a late change to nearby Liddington became unavailable to the organisers.
Now with classic car insurance specialists Adrian Flux as new headline sponsors the Adrian Flux Classic Car & Bike Show is set to retain its reputation as the leading southern-region gathering for historic and classic vehicles.
