My stepson needs to get some online insurance today............dont have alot of time to research. What would you say is the cheapest car insurance available on line........monthly payments?

I'm going to give you advice against your specific request, but only because I've seen what "the cheapest insurance" will do to your stepson and anyone involved in an accident he may get into.

I'm going to recommend you either place him on the same insurance you are on, because you will get a multicar or multi-driver discount, and because you ideally have a good history with your insurer so they will treat your stepson a bit better.

The cheapo companies will drop him the instant a bug hits the windshield and will guarantee a protracted legal battle if he gets into an accident if he ever wants to see his money or his car again.

I've been with State Farm for 13 years, and I've been through several accidents on both sides of the bender. They're pricier, but they've always treated me very well. The right company makes all the difference.....

PS.. He may get additional discounts on insurance with any carrier if he takes a driver's ed class, and if he gets good grades in school.

Should online car insurance companies (GEICO, Progressive, Esurance, etc.) be avoided? Why or why not?

No,there is convenience of being able to view your coverage, policy, order i.d. cards, file claims, and make changes to your policy 24 hours a day. The only downside I have seen is due to the actual consumer NOT paying attention to the e-mails that require one to review/sign and return the documents to finalize the binding of the policy.

Any online insurance carrier however, when in doubt of their stability or credibility, should check them out through the Department of Insurance prior to purchasing anything though.

There is no best place.
Insurance companies target market certain groups of people and give them their best rates. Groupings are based on prior insurance coverage, age, gender, credit rating, driving record, marriage status and even occupation. Your best source would be your local independent insurance agent. He/she knows who writes which group at what price.
Also, your agent can advise you on how to obtain the best quotes not just now, but also in six months. You may need some grooming.

I would like to purchase car insurance totally online so I can go out and drive my car today. Who could I go to for reasonable insurance?

I go through Geico. They have decent rates and you can always change it later if you find a better deal.
