I'm traveling to Mexico by car. I'll be crossing the border in Laredo, Texas. What is the most affordable mexican car insurance available? The last time I did this, it was about $65 for three days. I used Johnson Insurance.
the cost of car insurance depends a lot on what kind of car you are driving (year, model) and how much insurance coverage you yourself decide that you want. you can opt for a cheap policy which covers only the basics, or pay more to get a better more comprehensive coverage to include things like vandalism or partial theft. It also depends on how long you are going to be in Mexico (days? month? year?) and whether or not you intend to go back and forth more than once... my brother, for example, gets a yearly policy while my husband and I usually buy policies based on how long each of our trips is going to be.
we've used Baja Bound for about 6 years now and have been very satisfied. solid coverage, great customer service. I'll post a link below...

Is there some type of one time only Mexico travel insurance for your car? I am going to Tijuana for a weekend and my insurance company only covers until 50 miles out. I hear that there is some type of car insurance that Mexico offers? Does anybody know about that? I mean specifically for theft prevention. Thanks!
There's a little shop where you can get it right before the border. Look for the signs. It costs about $30 for a day.
Insurance? Yes.
In an effort to reduce the risk to the Citizens of New Mexico from uninsured motor vehicles operating on New Mexico highways, the 2001 New Mexico Legislature passed House Bill 847 to identify uninsured motorists and to assist in the enforcement of automobile liability insurance requirements of the state. The legislation directs the Department of Taxation and Revenue-Motor Vehicle Division to develop and operate an insurance identification database (IIDB). This database will be used by law enforcement officers, state agencies and courts to determine whether a particular vehicle has appropriate liability insurance coverage. The legislation requires the Motor Vehicle Division to issue an administrative suspension of the offender's vehicle registration if evidence of liability insurance is not provided by the owner's insurance company upon request. Effective October 9, 2002 registration of your vehicle(s) may be denied or delayed if the IIDB records do not show the vehicle(s) having insurance coverage The underlying rationale for the program is that if there are fewer uninsured motorists operating on the highways, the number of uninsured accidents will decline. The purpose of the New Mexico Insurance Identification Program is to provide an on line tool to law enforcement officials and the Motor Vehicle Division to determine whether reasonable grounds exist to believe that a person is operating a vehicle without the minimum liability insurance required by New Mexico law.

I have Progressive , but they will only cover 20 miles in from the border. We are traveling all the way into Michoacan, so that won't help. I just want to know if someone can refer me to a legitimate car insurance for taking your vehicle into Mexico. Please give me any you know of either by site, or phone number, or even by name and I will look up the rest. Thanks
That is the maximum Mexico endorsement I have ever seen & it is very minimal coverage at that. It is not the same coverage as you have when you are in the US anyway so I would not depend very much on it even if you were less than 20 miles from the border. What you can do is purchase Mexican insurance right before you cross the border. This is the best thing to do & is the only place I know of that will provide you the coverage you should have while travelling in Mexico.
I've had good info about it here:

If you plan to go to Mexico it is significant to have insurance coverage for your travel, as Mexico doesn’t accept foreign vehicle insurance in the event of an accident. While you often see insurance proffered in frontier towns, the coverage you possess is very important and has to be surveyed thoroughly, in the case of an accident, what the insurance covers is just as significant as the fact that you possess it. While buying Mexican insurance is pretty simple and may be proceeded online, it is significant to check the validity of the firm before practically purchasing the insurance. While finishing research, you have to make sure the provider is properly certified in addition to how their client service center works in event of an accident. One extremely significant thing to take into account when buying a Mexican car insurance coverage is the ability of the company to return the claim. It is not unusual for a broker to be the policy provider. Nevertheless, the practical claim is returned by the Mexican insurance provider guaranteeing it. Also, all coverages have to involve the provision of a claim regulator or lawyer as part of the insurance. With Mexico being under Napoleonic law, it is pretty possible that you might be considered at fault until proven innocent in the event of an accident, so it would be wise and sound to have anyone familiar with Mexican law at your side in the case such situation arises. When surveying the alternatives obtainable for cheap auto insurance in Mexico, you will find some insurance very similar to those you keep on your existing vehicle coverage. On the other part, Mexican policy also proffers coverage not generally an alternative, or considered, in your usual insurance. In the event of an accident, while Mexican amenability coverage can involve Civil Liability Insurance (maintains you in the case of physical or property injury), Guaranteed Bond and Legal Assistance (supplement of assistance necessary to deal with Authorities), Travel Assistance (involves medicinal help vehicle towage and basic data), Medical Expense for Occupants (medicinal expenses for the driver and passengers, normally involving uninsured or underinsured drivers), Property Damage to your Vehicle, Waiver of Deductible (impact), Vandalism and Increased Cost of Repair (covers a greater work rate per hour), Total and Partial Theft. While the above-mentioned are thought of as “standard” alternatives, coverage changes from company to company, and not all are an alternative when choosing insurance. Supplementary things to be taken into account when an accident befalls while driving in Mexico is the probability that you might be held financially liable for any injury and medicinal expenditures plus financial assistance till recovery. While thinking of insurance or its lack, it is significant to comprehend that accidents in Mexico are much different than what the standard American individual is used to. Most American states afford moving cars off the main path in the event of a small accident. In Mexico, this isn’t allowed. Autos have to remain in place till the police arrive to define if damage has befallen and who might be guilty. This may as well involve confiscating your carrier for further delimitation. Thus the significance of getting a policy that supplies a regulator or lawyer as part of the package. Before your Mexican driving travel starts, auto insurance has to be at the top of your do-list in things to purchase for both financial peace and peace of mind.
