I have to write a term paper about a state, local, or federal issue and I have decided to write about why massachusetts is the only state in the coutry that will now allow any competition amongst car insurance providers. It's an issue amongst drivers state-wide and Im wondering if someone knows anything about this obscene policy that might help me put this puzzle together. If someone has any sites or just general knowledge that may help me, I would appreciate it.
Will the last insurance company in Mass please turn out the lights when they leave? I work at a small car insurance company and when I want to cut the tension in a meeting, I suggest we sell in Massachusetts; breaks 'em up every time. Even independant sells in 49 states, everywhere but Mass.
A site I've recommended in the past would be...

Hope that helps.

I have heard that Massachusetts insurance companies are typically independent of California insurance companies. As a consequence, California insurance companies wont have access to my records in Mass. This would mean that my old claims/history won't affect my new insurance policy in California. Can someone tell me if this true.
Short answer: Yes it will.
Also, a good resource is...

I live in Massachusetts but I will be out of state for about 3 months and i have asked my friend to make payments on my car insurance for me while I am gone. He later tells me that he couldn't make payments because they need my car title in order to let him pay for me. Is this true or false?
Payment made in person at the insurance agency.
I suggest you call a local auto insurance agent to assist you. Since I live in Michigan I can't recommend anyone in Massachusetts, but here is an online resource that can help you. http://www.goodinternetdeals.com/Auto-In surance.html

Is New Hampshire auto insurance better then Massachusetts auto insurance rates?
Generally, yes, NH insurance rates are less than MA insurance rates. But, it also depends on where you live in each state & the company (there is now limited competition in MA). Also, MA is a PIP state & NH is NOT a PIP state, so there is less coverage in NH.
If you are moving to NH you will need to get a NH license, registration & insurance. If you are not moving & just want to get an address in NH to get insurance there, you can't. You have to sign a Residence Form stating you are actually a resident of NH & live there. It also states that you will notify your insurance as soon as you move out of state (at any time during the policy - even if it is years from the time you sign it). If you are really not a resident of NH and an accident occurs, the company WILL deny coverage & in essence, you were paying for a nonexistent policy.
A lot of insurance companies such as (gieco, nationwide) don't cover massachusetts. What are some of names of the providers with coverage in MA?
I have Commerce, it's not too bad. My husband has Plymouth Rock. Like someone else said, talk to an agent. Because of Massachusetts Auto Reform, more companies will be able to come to Mass so you'll be able to shop around more for better rates. I believe that starts April 1, 2008.
Massachusetts – Tips for Saving on Car Insurance
Between additional coverage requirements and higher prices overall, Massachusetts can be an expensive state for insuring your vehicles. The good news is that there are many ways to save on car insurance in Massachusetts, simply by knowing how to shop and what to look for in the best deals on car insurance. We’ve got the tips you need to get the coverage you need at the price you want in the Bay State.
Don’t SettleMany people purchase their car insurance from the first company they talk to, because they assume all car insurance companies are created equal. Not so. With dozens of insurance companies providing coverage to Massachusetts drivers it is much easier to find sufficient coverage at the best price. In fact, some online service will handle the rate comparisons for you. Simply type in your information and the online service will provide quotes from a handful of companies so you can choose the best coverage for your needs and budget. You can also find independent insurance agents who provide a similar type of service, because they work with a number of different companies.
...Praises Aired for Ex-Massachusetts Insurance Commissioner « Auto ...
Insurance companies , government officials, and national organizations hailed Massachusetts Insurance Commissioner Nonnie Burnes for the changes she introduced to the auto insurance industry. State Gov. Deval Patrick recently announced that Burnes would step down to pursue a teaching career at Northeastern University.
Burnes finished her law degree at the said university and became the state’s insurance commissioner in February 2007. During her term, she introduced a new car insurance scheme which ushered in more providers, increasing competition, which eventually led to cheaper auto insurance coverage . Burnes’ firm decision to abolish the state-set rating system draw flak from conservatives and Republican lawmakers. Critics of her program said that by allowing insurers to set insurance rates, residents in Massachusetts may have to actually pay more. Supporters of the new scheme, on the other hand, cited the influx of several new providers, resulting in competitive prices.
