im a 17 year old guy. im looking to buy a cheep car (around 500-700 pounds) with cheap insurance. i want a good looking car though. perhaps with 4 doors and good leg room in the back.. like rovers etc. (but not specifically rovers) can anybody recommend a good car or even better a place in Sussex to get good cheap cars.????

I'm looking to get my first car fairly soon. I'm still learning to drive and I would probably get the car and insurance before I take my test... on this topic I've noticed its cheaper for insurance on a provisional license than on a full but new license, but does this mean that once I get my full license my insurance will go up!? I understand that new drivers can be complacent and whatever, but this still doesn't make much sense to me.
Anyway, back to the question...
I'm quite tall (6"4' ish, maybe a bit more) so I'm looking for something with a bit more room in it. I can't really fit in a Peugeot 205 and my sister's Yaris is also a bit of a squeeze.
I've been looking at Vauxhall Astra's (2006ish) which fall just within budget and seem quite nice, but the 1.7l engine model (which is what all the ones for sale seem to be) is an insurance group 6.
Am I likely to find anything a similar size in a lower insurance group or am I wanting too much?
I'm not bothered by engine size and I suspect a 1.4l or 1.2l would fall into a lower insurance category. Problem is I can't find any similar cars with anything less than around a 1.6l.
My budget for the car is around £4000. Not bothered much by high mileage cars.
In terms of budget for the insurance, its whatever works out as cheapest. For the 1.7 Astra I was getting quotes of around £3200 which is quite frankly ridiculous - I could buy another car for that!
So basically, if anyone has any suggestions for hatchbacks that would be cheaper to insure, please send them my way!

I'm 19 and I drove a Jaguar S-type in the US. I've moved back to the UK and my insurance premiums are looking around £7000 (roughly 4x of what it was in the US).
What I'm thinking is what if I buy an s-type, and replace the engine with a small 1.6L engine (I don't care about speed, just luxury) and change the car to a 'kit car' status, will that lower my insurance to a more affordable rate? Thanks for any advice.
your rate is based on your age and sex.. so the car should not matter thats how it is in new jersey.. your premium shoul go down if you recieve no tickets and are a safe driver..

I would wait until the a level course is over until you start uni. in that time you can do some work experiance working with animals which will help you getting into uni. since you have a low income you can get bursurys to help pay for uni and (my brother is currently doing this) you can get a part time job at a shop or something while at uni. the job market should have recovered by then and you would be able to pay a little way for uni. a student loan is inevitable and you may need it to help pay off certain things.
overall talk to your bank and ask them (do this next year so that they dont panic about loans being given out) how you would pay for everything. they can normally sort...
