I have a 14yr old toyota previa with 185,000 miles, and my auto ins is coming up for renewal. It currently has the following coverages. Which do people typically remove for such older vehicles?
*liability
*uninsured motorists
*automonile medical payments
*auto collision
*auto comprehensive
I would suggest thinking about removing collision possibly even comprehensive.
You need to look at it from YOUR financial stand point.
For collision.....
#1 Do you have enough money that if you would hit a mailbox or another car with your car, and it was your fault, could you afford to pay a deductible and a little more premium on your bill, or have to go out on your own a buy a new car?
For comprehensive.....
#1 If you hit a deer, or if there was a hail storm, or your windshield broke from a truck in front of you, would it be easier to pay a deductible to get it fixed and pay a little extra premium each month OR would it be easier to just pay everything out of pocket to do the repairs needed.
Also you want to figure out what your vehicle's value is... or approximately is, my suggestion is to go to www.nada.com.
But MOST people that have older cars will remove collision and/or comp. You can have comp w/ no collision and the reason why some people keep comprehensive on the policy without collision is because there are a lot of things that are out of your control that can happen to your vehicle that IF you didn't have comprehensive coverage, you would be responsible to pay to fix the vehicle. For example: THEFT, Vandalism, an act of god/nature (like a deer, animal or bird, a tornado, flood, hail storm), most glass breakage....
You must have liability and medical.
I would recommend keeping the uninsured motorist because that protects YOU in the event that you are in an accident with someone else who is at fault and they have no insurance and cause you bodily injury, then at least you can get bodily injury limits from your policy if that other person has no insurance.... otherwise your bodily injury damage is your problem, not the insurance's problem.
Hope this helps.

I bought car insurance from AIG on-line; the policy does not state that I am or am not covered when renting a car. I live in Texas. The policy I have does note various 'endorsements' related to Texas. When I call the help desk at AIG and ask if I am covered, they cannot tell me. Does the Texas Auto Insurance endorsements require that my insurance go with me when renting a car? If I am also driving someone else's car, what coverage would go with me as part of standard Texas policy? I have Liability, Uninsured/underinsured, coverage for damage to my auto (other than collision/collision). When I rent a car from say Enterprise, if my own insurance is in force, what extra coverage should I get so I do not have to pay a thing if their car gets scratched or dented? thank you.....frustrated in Texas.
Read your policy carefully. If it has language that specifically extends coverage to "non-owned vehicles" then you may be covered. It should also define "non-owned vehicles" since that definition varies from one policy to the next and one company to the next.
With some policies, coverage is only extended to "temporary replacement vehicles" meaning that if your car is out of service and you rent one while yours is being repaired, you're covered. This would NOT include a rental car while traveling on business or vacation.
A good policy will specifically explain when you are covered and when you are not. But if the policy doesn't specifically state that you're covered in a rental vehicle you should assume that you are NOT covered. That's the ONLY safe assumption that you can make.
Even if coverage is extended to rental vehicles, you need to make sure that ALL coverage is extended. Some policies ONLY extend liability coverage while others extend all coverage. Again, if your policy is silent, assume that NO coverage is extended.
Best bet: Look for a policy that extends to all vehicles operated by you or any named insured driver on the policy. Many companies offer policies with this coverage and it's cheap peace of mind.
Hint: If AIG's help desk cannot answer the question, it's time to find another insurance company!

My car was broken into (back window was smashed) and an expensive new laptop was stolen. I have comprehensive auto insurance, and even the cops told me that auto insurance would cover it. However the insurance claims person says that only car and parts of car are covered. Is this something thats a given fact or is it just that i need to talk to argue with the insurance company?
In response to another question, someone here said that i may need to consult a lawyer and threaten to complainw with Better Business Bureau etc. Would that help? Does it matter whether this incident is called vandalism versus burglary (the car window was smashed into, there were witnesses, was a police report).
Any other ideas to help recover the costs? The value of the good stolen is around $3500...
I have already answered this. Only components of the VEHICLE are covered under comprehensive insurance. Your back glass is covered, your laptop is NOT. That's what happens when you leave a $3500.00 laptop in your CAR.
P.S. -- to the idiot that told you a lawyer can get this paid under your comp., you are a complete idiot.
I had tire tread fly into my car on the highway. Tore the bumper and smashed the condenser. The insurance company has after market parts on the estimate, but I want to sell this car someday and want OEM. I'm pretty sure I am out of luck, but just wanted to make sure as this is my first time dealing with an incident. Thanks.
Haha, yes, I know what after market is. What I didn't know was insurance policy and effect to the value of the vehicle. Great answers so far. Thanks for all your help.
When you go to sell the car they wont' care about the OEM parts. If you go to a dealer to trade the car in, they will see work is done. Right there they will assume the worst. You can fight yoru insurance company. Get an estimate on your own and see if they will pay for it or meet you half way.

Thinking Faster: Comparing Health Insurance to Auto Insurance
I've heard recently the President and members of Congress compare Health Insurance to Auto insurance. After all, most states require that a driver carry auto insurance, and if we can require insurance for drivers, why can't we require health insurance for individuals. There's a couple of fallacies in this argument, it seems to me.
First, driving is a privilege not a right. Your rights to drive can be suspended or revoked. I guess one could say that life is a privilege and not a right, but once you are here, at least in the US, you are guaranteed Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. No mention of a right to health care, or the right to drive a car. So, for those who desire to create a new mandate or moral obligation for health care, comparing that to driving or auto insurance is a specious argument. Everyone has a right to live, but not everyone has the right to drive. I think a "moral" case can be made that everyone should have reasonable access to decent health care, but that's not a corollary to auto insurance.

3. Is there any risk involved? You're taking more of a risk when buying from these type of car auctions because the cars are sold in as-is condition and will need repairs and/or body work done. Sometimes the repairs could be as little as replacing a bumper to something so serious the car can only be used for parts. The car could've also been in a flood which will cause the electrical system to go out sooner or later. So, know what you're getting into! So, now you know the real deal about insurance salvage auto auctions. They sell cars that have been totaled, so you're going to have to make some kind of repair to it no matter what. You can find one near you by looking online or going with a used car dealer you know. But, you're really better off going to a regular public auto auction that has cars that are generally in good condition. That way you don't have to come out of your pockets to pay for repairs.
