Car Motor Insurance Uk

Answers

(UK) Car insurance. Is it worth paying the £20 to £30 extra for Motor Legal Protection?
London Rush Hour

Is this actually worth paying for or is it just a fancy add-on which sounds important and worth having but is actually not?

Someone told me that if you are involved in an accident which was not your fault.. then you could take it any of the masses of solicitors who advertise on tv and who do no win/no fee insurance work to seek compensation/damages from the other party's insurers.

Motor legal protection is an insurance policy against you having to pay solicitors and other costs in an, unsuccesfull, attempt to claim back uninsured losses from another driver.

What are uninsured losses? These are losses that are not covered under your own insurance policy - typically the excess, and, if you don't have comprehensive cover, the damage to the vehicle. In addition there would be a claim for time off work, whiplash/ injuries. These losses have to be quantified and specialists paid for to work them out. Policies may also cover prosecution defence cover to defend you against being prosecuted and the better ones also include an accident management service so you can report any accident/ theft to them and they will help you with the whole claim.

If you make a claim through a no-win, no-fee solicitor and win then there will obviously be a fee! This could be a percentage of the award typically 25% - and 25% of £10,000 is . . . You may also have to buy After The Event Insurance - which is a LOT more expensive than Before The Event.

However there are two rubs (and the FSA is investigating the sale of ULR insurance because of it):

1) Often the policy is sold and then your advisor passes the case onto a local firm of solicitors because they will be paid a referral fee.

2) Many of the 'insurance' policies are not actually underwritten at all! Companies offer to do the work because they can claim costs from the third party and often hire-out cars

As the policy is one of insurance you must receive a key facts/ policy summary before you take it out and your insurers must split the premium i.e. tell you how much it costs including IPT

The Government have recently brought in registration of companies who 'ambulance chase' in an attempt to clear up the industry. An insurance broker that has a properly underwritten ULR scheme is exempt UNLESS they recommend firms to handle the claim.

Finally - have a guess at the cost of the policy to the intermediary - you can always ask them how much commission they make! I would point out that if they did not earn money from the sale of ULR then they would have to increase their other fees. Personally I think that anything over £20.00 at the moment is a bit overpriced unless there are excellent benefits included.

UK Car Insurance for Transsexuals?

What is the legal status of transsexuals with respect to motor insurance in the UK? Does an MTF transsexual (i.e., a woman born a boy) still have to pay men's (exorbitant) insurance prices even after the Operation, or does she qualify for cheaper car insurance?

Sure most motor insurance companies will happily write you a policy in a female name, but while you are pre-op they are highly unlikely to adjust premium / risk in your favour ....

.... basically you remain "male" in actuarial terms (my own UK experience following honest disclosure ) - and since when did oral estrogens really affect your driving style / cut aggression ? - just made me a bit crazier a driver than I was already, cooler headed yes, more relaxed, but faster !

If you fail to tell your "past" gender to your insurers they have valid and legal reasons to decline any claim, certainly if you don't have a "Gender Recognition Certificate".

Of course a broker might tell you that you're getting "female rates" to get your business, and absorb it in comission or profits .... but the cheapest insurers tend to be inflexible.

Even if you are post-op in the UK, and with GRC & amended Birth Certificate, insurance remains effectively outwith the legal UK GRA framework.

If you fail to disclose your past history of your life as a "male" to life assurers or medical insurers you absolutely invalidate your policy .... after all for a late transitioner (40 - 60's) you do not suddenly accquire the longevity, better cardiac health, etc. of a born female, indeed HRT might cause serious added health issues ....

.... or suddenly become a calmer driver (esp. for younger TS women) !

Sure post-op & post-GRC you have good legal grounds for not revealing "past gender" when applying for new motor insurance, but I know insurance companies were "stick in the mud" when the Gender Recognition Act was being put together insistent that one's history influences risk. Not sure if the insurance companies would challenge, or whether its ever been tested in the courts.

And as for health and life insurance policies forget it !

For health, medical, travel, life policies you usually have to disclose details that would "give the game away" anyway, like past hospitalizations, surgeries, current medication, indeed any significant factor that might affect your risk whether specifically asked or not (the delights of smallprint) !

So GRC does not confer automatic insurance rights, even when the "Provision of Goods & Services Act" is amended to include us .... one of the few areas where TS equality in UK law remains currently unresolved.

How can an American buy UK Motor Insurance?

I'm participating in the Mongol Rally this year (www.teamshadowboat.com) and we are trying to buy a car in the UK. We can't seem to figure out how we can buy UK insurance without a UK address. If anyone has any suggestions, they would be most welcome! Thank you.

Stopped by the Police For Driving Without Car insurance any advice (UK Only)?

the police stopped me today because i did not have car insurance but i insisted i did have insurance so they called the insurance company and the police was told the insurance expired on the 15/02/2009 now the thing is i am a new driver which means they will take my driving license!!!!!!! :'(

it is my own fault in the end but im really angry on my insurance company (Tesco) as i received a Notice letter on 16/01/09 from them saying:

''your motor insurance will be renewed 15/02/09, THIS IS AN AUTOMATIC RENEWAL - NO NEED TO DO ANYTHING''

and they did write it with capital letters anyway

should i go to court? no idea what to do they even took the care to the car pound my life is ruined :( help please your advice would be great
i pay the insurance company by direct debit...
tesco insurance is close now i have to wait for tomorrow to call them and

it is monthly paid the last payment was on 28 of January 2009

I don't know all the details of your insurance whether you pay monthly or annually and whether it definitely was supposed to renew automatically or not and if so whether the details they have on file for your payment method have expired e.g. new bank card with new expiry date/issue number etc?

You would need to check into all this and if you do have a document that says your insurance was going to automatically renew you would have to find out why it didn't.

Usually after 12 months you would have different terms for your insurance e.g. you may have an extra year n.c.b. to add on and may get a lower rate. You'd need to check into all this. There may have been something you needed to do in order for your insurance to renew.

Think people would need more info like this to offer any advice. My best advice would be to take a look at all the info from Tesco regarding your motor insurance and read carefully what it says. Also speak to a Solicitor specialising in road traffic laws and motoring offenses. You may also want to visit TPUC.

Great Britain is a Common Law jurisdiction and its my belief that essentially you haven't done anything unlawful provided that you have not infringed on the life, liberty, property, or rights of anyone else.

You should be wary of anything written in capital letters. You should also be wary of the word "register" and "registration". When you register your car what you're essentially doing is agreeing to transfer the ownership of your car to the government who will allow you to use it on the roads in exchange for the document they give you from the DVLA. You then have to play by their "rules" (not laws) and make sure that you pay insurance, insurance premium tax, RFL car tax, fuel tax tax (double tax) have a valid license etc etc.

I have a question about motor trade insurance (uk) ....?

I am an employee of a MOT garage and am covered under their motor trade insurance policy to drive customers cars or any car under their control for business purpose.
Now, say for example I bought my own personal car which wasn't insured in for repairs to the garage where I work, would you think the 'drive customers cars or any car under the garages control for business purpose' would still apply if I were to be driving my car for business purpose?
assuming of course that in this instance I am the customer...
thanks, this is not for a claim, but because I got pulled over by the plice and given a producer

I have been a garage owner and employed people. While they were covered by the policy in work they were not covered outside work. You could produce your boss,s insurance certificate with a letter from your boss saying that you had just repaired the brakes and were road testing the car so were covered on his policy but if you were stopped at 11 pm it wouldnt hold.Depends what time you were stopped and if your boss will help you and how tolerant the police were.
