I will be needing UK car insurance - I just passed my UK driving test. I have nearly 30 yrs experience driving in total (no accidents/claims) as I have held a US license during that time. I'm a middle aged woman - not a young driver, but wonder if my previous driving experience will count for anything with the insurance rates here in the UK. Or will I be treated as a new/inexperienced driver? I am resident in the UK with citizenship - so I'm not here temporarily.
over a certain age there are good offers try " insurance mature drivers " e.g. SAGA , also your employer or Trade union or AA / RAC ( MATURE DRIVERS ) Good luck you can drive now like every other nutcase , when you go back the states they ( police ) pull you over for driving up the arse of a H.G.V. fun here innit ! It's like on the road , PUSH , ARGUE for some no claims with your experience . The county sherrif flashed me and I flashed the truck in front .

I'm confused about something. I've been driving for about 7 months and have my own insurance which is fully comp and I pay £102 each month. Only now my boyfriend drives my car but only has just passed his test last month. I need to put him on my insurance as a 2nd driver. Only I'm sure that I have read and when I took out my own insurance that by putting a 2nd driver onto my insurance would lower my rate. However I have been doin online quotes and all of them are basically sayin I'll be paying around £300 MORE a month, which we cannot afford! I'm confused because I thought that with him being on it we'll be paying less or around the same amount! Can he take out his own insurance on my car or does he have to go on mine? Also does anyone know why it'll cost so much more for him to go on mine? Thank you :)
It is the driver who is insured to drive your car. An inexperienced / young driver will always cost more to insure.

I'm 19 and I drove a Jaguar S-type in the US. I've moved back to the UK and my insurance premiums are looking around £7000 (roughly 4x of what it was in the US).
What I'm thinking is what if I buy an s-type, and replace the engine with a small 1.6L engine (I don't care about speed, just luxury) and change the car to a 'kit car' status, will that lower my insurance to a more affordable rate? Thanks for any advice.
your rate is based on your age and sex.. so the car should not matter thats how it is in new jersey.. your premium shoul go down if you recieve no tickets and are a safe driver..

Ok we all know the rates for under 21's are stupidly high.
But I still need to drive.
Im currently 17, with a full UK license and a pass+.
Im looking at a 1.4 VW polo (non 16v model), as its the only decent car I can afford to insure right now.
My problem is this:
1)The only way I can afford to drive, it to pay insurance monthly.
Are there any insurers that have good rep for young driver quotes?
2) My mate has told me about a company that has very low rates, But restrict the hours you can drive (i.e. no driving after 11pm).
Does anyone know the name of such a company?
cheers for all answers!
shit country we live in m8!! i got my test on monday coming!! shi*ing myself

Finding Car Insurance in London, UK
Finding cover for your vehicle if you live in an urban area might be expensive but there are steps you can take to reduce your costs. Where you find your insurance can also make a huge difference to the amount you have to pay. Car insurance in London, UK can be very expensive. In a city, not only is there more traffic so a higher probability that you will be involved in an accident, but there are also higher crime rates so your vehicle is more likely to be damaged or stolen. This means that most car insurance premiums are higher for people who live in a large city like London compared to those who live in more rural areas. Even so, there are still things you can do to cut down the amount you are paying for vehicle cover.
...Savings Rates – Are You Getting the Best Rate For Your Money ...
We are not talking about serious longer term investments here. This is money which is meant to be safe and accessible, and preferably tax efficient. It could well be that it’s money earmarked for your tax bill, for example.
So, the natural products that come to mind are National Savings (NS&I), as well as all the various banks and building societies deposit accounts. But of course it all depends on what the rates are, and indeed would it not be better to pay off debt if your lender allows you to?
We disregard Cash ISAs here as the amounts you can put away each year are very modest at £3,600 (rising to £5,100 pa from April 2010). However, if these amounts are in the range of what you need, it would certainly pay to look at these first, as they are tax free.
