It is illegal to drive without a valid car insurance. I am unable to get a single quote for car insurance, what am I doing wrong or where is the catch?
I am a new driver, have a provisional driving licence for a month. The car I want to buy is a large Mercedes S class (5-litre engine) that cost ca. £15K (I have my reasons).
Why they would not insure me if I only want the THIRD PARTY LIABILITY cover (the minimum required by law)? The insurance company does not risk paying for my luxury car as third party cover does not cover the car, is that correct?

When I change driving licence in forms from "provisional" to "full UK the result is the same (also no quotes at all). But when I change the "car" to e.g. a small Focus or similar, no problem, cheap insurance available and dozens of quotations are appearing.

Firstly, there are no (or very few) insurance companies in the UK who will insure a uk registered car to a non UK license holder.
This is even less likely when they want a named driver who only has a provisional license and the car is worth 15k.
It is all about risk and reward - there is way too much risk and unlikely to be much reward.
It is not a case of new drivers not allowed to drive luxury cars - I know of quite a number who have have high powered or luxury cars but they are UK license holders and residents. Also they pay thousands for the insurance.
Live with it. Buy a smaller car. It is just how it is.
Having rung round a few car insurance companies yesterday for a quote, I was surprised that they all asked me whether or not I smoked. I'm used to this sort of question on health or life insurance, but CAR? I don't remember this ever happening before. Guess they up the premium a bit for smokers. Has anyone else found the same?
Fubar. I'm sure that using a phone in the car is more dangerous and distracting than smoking, but they didn't ask me that!
it is seen as a possible distraction and therefore a risk. they don't ask over mobiles as it is illegal to use non hands free. much in the same way they dint ask if you speed as that is illegal too. As all insurance quotes are measured directly to risks that they have vast amounts of statistics to back up their premium assessments
Please provide me the steps required and the companies names who provide online quotation systems for this purpose and also provide the insurance providers names.

hi, i m jack from Adelaide. I had a minor car accident (drivin friend's car) month ago. yes, it was my fault becoz i was taking a RIGHT turn (street to highway)6am in the morning, the sun was shining right front of my face. waited for all the traffic to go past but missed a car that was right front of me on the highway, waiting 2 come my way. So I ended it up hitting his right bumper with my right front guard. No damage to my car but 2 small dents and scrathes on his. exchanged info. but no Police report. I asked him to do it without insurance, he said big NO! i told him that i'll give you couple of hundred bucks extra, but again NO! His insurance company called me, I told them honestly everything n admited my mistake.

The only Adelaide I've heard of is in Australia, so I'm guessing I'm correct in that... I don't know if it is totally different than it is in the US, so assuming it's not, you can still turn the claim in with your insurance company, the liability coverage follows you, not your vehicle, so your company should pay for the vehicle you hit, but not the vehicle you were driving.
