I am going on vacation in Florida and am renting a car. I have car collision coverage through my credit card company but want to know if my regular liability insurance covers me while driving a rental too or do I need special insurance?
You need to check that with your car insurance company. Different states have different regulations. In NYS, you are covered anywhere because we have "no fault" but I have relatives in NC that found out the hard way when they first moved there. Best to phone your company for accurate information. Be aware of credit card coverage also because they too have inserted "legal" language that can come back to haunt you if a claim is filed. Not all cards are the same...

It covers damages to another car if you are at fault. Example:
You rent a Ford Mustang and then rear end a Chevy Tahoe. The SLP will cover damages to the Chevy Tahoe but NOT the Ford. You either have to take their Damage Waiver to pay for the FORD Mustang or file with your own carrier.
REVISION: My answer is based on the fact I live in Texas and our insurance rules are backwards. The person below who said I was wrong in incorrect, I am only giving you information regarding Texas insurance laws. I worked for a rental car company for 5 years and am now an adjuster for a insurance company. I know a thing or two about this sort of question.
I'm renting a car through Enterprise in Nova Scotia. My credit card covers any damage to my car, but does not offer third-party liability. I'm reading in some places that, in Canada, third-party liability is automatically included in rental rates due to government regulations. Still, I can't seem to find confirmation from Enterprise. I'm renting the car in the morning, so right now, I have no way to contact Enterprise. Does anybody know?
I don't know about Nova Scotia, but in Manitoba there is an automatic $200,000 liability insurance on a rented car. It isn't much, but the $1 million I carry on my own vehicle carries over to any car I rent or borrow in Canada or the US. Check with your own insurer to see if your TPL goes with you. Also check to see if your insurer can sell you a non-owned vehicle policy for the term you have the rental.
We are traveling to Spain this summer and neither the rental car agencies (Avis or Hertz), our stateside insurance provider (State Farm), or our credit card company (American Express) offer liability coverage in a foreign country. I would much appreciate any advice or experience anyone may have with this.
I think that Avis and Hertz don't make clear their information on liability coverage in Europe. Liability insurance (Basic Public Liability and Property Damage) is included in the rate of the vehicle, up to the minimum limits required by the law of the particular country.
When they say that liability insurance is not available to buy, it means that there is no ADDITIONAL Liability insurance options to purchase.
You many notice when booking a car in the US that there is an insurance option called ALI (Additional Liablity Insurance) -- what this does is raise the renters coverage for public liability and property damage damage beyond the minimum level required by law. (The car is automatically covered up to the minimum limit required for liability).
If you call an Avis or Hertz rep, they will be able to confirm for you that basic liability insurance is already included in your rate for the rental in spain. Remember it's only public liability and property damage that is covered.. not any damage or theft of the rental car itself.

a car hit me from Enterprise Car Rental in Louisiana with no insurance. Enterprise said the driver/renter must provide liability insurance but did NOT make sure he had minimal insurance required by law . i hired a attorney last week . what is the law ? how do i find out if he had insurance ?
The rental car company makes people sign a waiver if they do not take the rental car insurance. The best way to find out if that person had insurance is to press charges for the damages and if that person has insurance they will notify their insurance fairly rapidly because they do not want to pay those charges out of pocket. This is usually included with the payment plan for your rental car. Most car rental places are required to have car insurance for their rentals because THEY own the vehicle. So basically auto insurance works like this: If you OWN the vehicle you are responsible to have auto insurance. If you want a tag on a car you have to have auto insurance FIRST. So if the car you rent has a tag on it already, then it is insured through that car rental company. If you have to put a tag on the car (which is unusual) you have to get your own auto insurance. The DMV will tell you this. Just try to get a car tag without insurance.
By law, rental companies must provide the state required amount of liability insurance. Generally, these amounts are low and do not provide much protection. Often the state mandated minimum is $20,000 per person / $40,000 per accident. If you are responsible for paying for someone’s injury because of an at fault accident how far do you think $20,000 would go? After the $20,000 is paid out the bills go to you. (ouch!)
