I am going to the states (Florida) in a few weeks and have arranged a hire car through Dollar. I have just found out that the rate I have been quoted does not include insurance. Can anyone tell me how the car insurance system works over there? With UK car hire it is included as it’s compulsory to be insured, is this the case in the states or are the rules different? Do I need to arrange for a 3rd party to insure me/the car while on holiday?

Sorry but you are going to need full insurance (not sure of the price nowadays). It is a common practice that the people that sell cheap or free car hire will then charge the earth for insurance.
Take a look at this website www.uscarhire.co.uk
We always use them and have never found a better deal. Absolutely everything is included insurance wise, so the price they quote is the price you pay.
Contact your agent or Dollar to see how much insurance would be then check out the site above and you will probably find it is cheaper to use them than pay for insurance.
Another tip is to join Dollar Express (you can do it throught the site above). It is free to join and much quicker to pick up your car at the airport.

I am an American citizen and will be working in Canada for 1-2 years. My car is registered and (currently) insured in Florida. I'm not sure if there's anything special I should do, and whether my car insurance company will take care of me, should I have an accident in Canada.
provincial jurisdiction. check with the provincial authority. but if you are staying longer than 6 months, you are considered a resident, and required to register and insure your car in the province you are residing. you can keep your regular insurance for a few months though until you get settled in and find a local insurance company.
so right now i have Farmers. How can american family insurance charge me more than half of what i am paying now? Is there a scam? and they told me that i can call my agent from Farmers and drop them right now and they have to pay me back what i have already paid in advanced. Is that true?
Yes they will pay you back, However (I was insurance agent ) it is kinda a scam the quote you got is not a guarantee until it goes threw underwriting there is NO way for the agent to tell you what your premium will be that is up to the underwriters. Its only a quote based on you credit score however that is only 1 facter underwriters take into consideration and of course once you drop farmers they kinda have you as I am sure he had you sign an commitment of some kind, however that is not legally binding you still have the right to go threw someone else for insurance however if you don't go with them and you let them cancel your Farmers insurance than you will be without until you find someone else. ITs best to wait and see what he comes back with after underwriting and cancel your own insurance after that.
Also: If I require an american bank account to pay them, how can I get one from canada? And how would I transfer money back and forth between the accounts? I've tried transferring money to my american girlfriend's account but my online banking won't allow it.
Your Canadian bank should be willing to cut you international money orders, which the American debtors should be willing to accept.
The easiest way to transfer funds around, is a wire transfer. Last time I did that, it was $26.
Paypal will do it, also, and of course charge you an exchange fee.
Or, you could try to get a Mastercard or Visa debit card on that Canadian account, and pay bills here using that visa card. I have no idea what the fees will be, though.

The Las Vegas police department has a special automotive theft unit that keeps track of the number of automotive-related arson claims that they receive each year. According to a recent Wall Street Journal article, In 2007, when gas prices began to spike pretty heavily, the number of claims began to jump. In 2008, the rates climbed by 6% nationally. In some harder-hit areas such as Michigan, New York, Indiana, the number of arson rates increased by 15% between 2007 and 2008!
