I'm just moving out of Virginia into Maryland and I am very overwhelmed by the high premiums that I will have to pay oppose to the lower premiums that I was paying for 2 cars in Virginia.
Does anyone know a good cheap car insurance company?

Maryland has VERY high rates, if you're looking for something to compare to the VA rates . . you're not going to FIND it. There are just more losses, more traffic, and more lawsuits, that's all there is to it.
Your best bet is to go to one or two independent agents, ask them to get you 4-5 quotes EACH, and compare that way. But they're ALL going to be in the same ball park.

They say that first-time drivers get expensive rates for car insurance and that it can become affordable with a parent signing the application with his/her driver's license. Now my parents don't want to help me w/ the car insurance....how do I get affordable car insurance without their help?

But to find a cheap price you should get several quotes, do some legwork till something really cheap will come along.
If you buy an oldish Corolla, they are cheap to insure and fair on gas, get liability only and that's the cheapest type of cover you may get.
But get several quotes, try them all, they are free so find the cheapest one, it's out there.
Unfortunately, many insurance companies today do run credit checks before they will write your insurance. Mine does and having a bad credit record CAN affect your insurance rates greatly. Every company has its own set of rules and practices that it goes by and it's own set of rates. Call around and get quotes from several different places and go with the one that gives you the best rate. Not every company charges the same.
I currently have Famers and have been a loyal customer to them for several years. I have no priors, no tickets and I'm a great driver. They have just increased my rates and I don't agree with that. Could there be a reason . In the mean time, I think I would like to shop around for different insurance. Thanks for any ideas.

If you are a member, or can become one, of a warehouse club like Costco or Sam's club, they offer phenomenal deals on auto insurance. You can get a quote right from their web site.
Last time I shopped my auto insurance, I tried all the big name insurers, a couple of comparison web sites, and Costco beat them all by $500 per year.
